Abstract

The development of Bali cattle (Bos sondaicus) farming plays a strategic role in improving rural livelihoods and supporting the sustainability of Indonesia’s livestock sector. However, farmers’ interest in developing Bali cattle enterprises varies considerably and is influenced by multiple socioeconomic factors. This study aims to analyze the socioeconomic determinants affecting farmers’ interest in raising Bali cattle in Kusambi District, West Muna Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The research was conducted from April to May 2025 using a quantitative approach with a survey design. Data were collected from 80 Bali cattle farmers selected through purposive sampling and analyzed using multiple linear regression. The explanatory variables included farmers’ education level, farming experience, age, income, calf price, and market access, while farmers’ interest in Bali cattle farming served as the dependent variable. The results indicate that socioeconomic factors collectively have a significant effect on farmers’ interest in Bali cattle production. Partially, farmers’ age and market access have a positive and significant influence on farmers’ interest, whereas education level, farming experience, income, and calf price do not show significant effects. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.243 suggests that the model explains 24.3% of the variation in farmers’ interest, while the remaining variation is influenced by factors not included in the model. These findings indicate that Bali cattle farming in Kusambi District remains largely traditional and is predominantly perceived as a secondary livelihood activity and a form of household savings. Therefore, strengthening market access, empowering farmers of productive age, and enhancing institutional support and extension services are essential to increasing farmers’ interest and ensuring the sustainability of Bali cattle farming.
