Abstract

A pilgrimage may be legally valid yet feel spiritually incomplete when social expectations equate devotion with physical endurance. This study examines how family dynamics influence Hajj/Umrah decisions, acceptance of Islamic legal dispensations (rukhsah), and pressures for ritual perfection. Using qualitative phenomenology, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five Indonesian participants: two older pilgrims and three family companions. Thematic analysis identified three patterns. Families negotiated religious aspirations alongside financial, health, and caregiving responsibilities; prioritised ritual validity and safety; and generally supported rukhsah, whereas neighbours and colleagues reinforced expectations of flawless performance. Despite familial reassurance, one companion experienced persistent guilt, illustrating a gap between legal permissibility and emotional acceptance. The study develops three interconnected concepts: negotiated religious responsibility, the religious accommodation–emotional acceptance gap, and protective familial buffering. These findings extend social verification perspectives and contribute to Islamic family law by framing religious moderation as a relational process among older pilgrims and their accompanying family members. They support family-inclusive manasik, community education, and psychosocial guidance, while calling for comparative research across diverse pilgrimage settings. Keywords: Family Dynamics; Hajj/Umrah; Religious Moderation; Rukhsah; Social Pressure.
