Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study aims to determine the effect of variations in the concentration of chitosan on the characterization of the optical properties of chitosan from crab shells. This research was divided into two stages, namely the stage of making chitosan through the deproteination process carried out with 3.5% NaOH ratio of 1:10 (w / v) reacted at a temperature of 70-800C for 60 minutes, continued with the demineralization process with 2 M HCl compared to 1: 10 (w / v) was reacted at a temperature of 70-800C for 120 minutes, the deacetylation process with 20% NaOH ratio of 1:20 (w / v) was reacted at 90-1000C, and the stage of making chitosan-PVA membranes. With a concentration of 1%, 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5% chitosan. The resulting chitosan-PVA membrane was then tested for optical properties using UV-Vis spectrophotometry which aims to determine the absorbance and transmittance values of the chitosan-PVA membrane. The results of UV-Vis spectrophotometric testing showed the highest transmittance value was 23.66% at a concentration of 2.5% and the highest absorbance value was 2.43 at a concentration of 2.5%.
