Abstract

This study aims to determine the functional groups of silica extracted from waste bamboo leaves, corn leaves, cymbopogon nardus redle leaves, cymbopogon citratus leaves and sugarcane leaves. Research method is experiment. Leaf ashed was carried out at a temperature about 350-400℃ for 5 hours. The result of leaf ash are leached by mixing 10 g of leaf ash and 120 mL of 5M HCl which was homogenized with a hot plate magnetic stirrer at a temperature of 110℃ for 3 hours with a stirring speed of 240 rpm, after that it was filtered with whattman 41 and precipitated to a neutral pH and then filtered again, then dried in an oven at a temperature of 105℃ for 2 hours. The samples were characterized by FTIR to determine the functional groups. The FTIR results showed that samples of cymbopogon nardus redle, bamboo, cymbopogon citratus leaf ash containing Si-O-Si groups and all leaf samples containing Si-O groups, but the highest absorption peak of silica functional groups was in samples of cymbopogon nardus redle leaves, at a wave number of 1065.48 cm-1 which is indicated as a Si-O-Si group. There are also impurities at a wave number about 2112 cm-1 for cymbopogon nardus redle, bamboo, corn, cymbopogon citratus leaves which are indicated as C=C groups and at a wave number about 3332 cm-1 indicated as OH group for all types of leaves. So it can be concluded that these leaves are a source of silica.
