Abstract

Durian shell waste can be used as raw material for briquettes which have a high calorific value. This study aims to determine the effect of charcoal temperature variations on the calorific value and burning rate of durian shell briquettes. Charcoal briquettes were obtained in some steps, namely carbonization at a temperature of 450˚C for 2 hours. Then grinding and sieving the charcoal with a size of 80 Mesh. Mixing charcoal and binder, using tapioca starch binder, which is 10% of the total weight of charcoal powder. Pressing briquettes with a pressure of 100 kg/cm drying under the sun for 3 days. Briquettes with a temperature of 450˚C obtained 5373 cal/gr. The calorific value at temperature 300˚C is 4981 cal/gr, the calorific value at temperature 350˚C is 4991 cal/gr, the calorific value at temperature 400˚C is 5004 cal/gr, and the calorific value at temperature 500˚C is 5003 cal/gr. But the calorific value at temperatures of 300˚C and 350˚C does not meet the SNI, namely 5000 cal/gr but is almost close. The result of the burning rate of briquettes at a temperature of 450˚C that is 0,0051 gr/s, at a temperature of 300˚C that is 0,0044 gr/s, at a temperature of 350˚C that is 0,0045 gr/s, at a temperature of 400˚C that is 0,0048 gr/s and at a temperature of 500˚C that is 0,0047.
