Abstract

This study aims: (1) to determine the variation of time and temperature of activation with H3PO4 on the quality of activated charcoal from candlenut shells through proximate analysis, (2) to find out what time and temperature of activation with H3PO4 are optimal for the quality of activated charcoal produced from candlenut shells. through proximate analysis. Candlenut shell activated carbon was obtained in three stages, namely the preparation stage, the carbonization stage using a pyrolysis reactor for ±8 hours at a temperature of 400°C, the chemical activation stage using the H3PO4 activator with time variations (1 hour, 9 hours, 18 hours and 24 hours). and temperature variations (RT, 60°C, 80°C and 100°C). Analysis of the quality of the activated charcoal of candlenut shells was carried out by proximate analysis with the aim of knowing the water content, ash content, volatile matter content and bound carbon content. The results of the proximate analysis for water content and volatile matter content in this study decreased with increasing activation time and temperature, ash content decreased with decreasing activation time and temperature and bound carbon content increased with increasing activation time and temperature. The results in this study obtained the highest levels of bound carbon at 24 hours activation with a temperature of 100°C, while the lowest levels of bound carbon at 1 hour activation with RT. The overall value obtained in this study meets SNI.
