Abstract

Kata Kunci: Penyakit difteri, Balita Diphtheria is an infectious disease that can be prevented by immunization. Diphtheria is caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae which attacks the upper respiratory system. Based on a survey conducted from 2018 to 2019 in Hendea Village, two toddlers who were infected with diphtheria were identified. Based on the criteria for the diphtheria disease prevention program, it has been categorized as an extraordinary event (Dinkes Sultra, 2019). The purpose of this study was to determine the cause of the emergence of diphtheria in Hendea Village, Sampolawa District, South Buton Regency. The informants in this study were one mother of a toddler who suffered from diphtheria, one neighbor of the mother of a toddler and local health workers. The research method used is a qualitative type of research with a case study approach, a case study approach is a part that wants to explore a particular case in greater depth by involving the collection of various sources of information. The data obtained are based on in-depth studies and interviews of all informants. From the results of the study it can be concluded that the incidence of diphtheria in toddlers is caused by the mother's low knowledge of diphtheria disease and the importance of immunization for toddlers so they are reluctant to take their toddlers to the integrated health post for immunization. Mother's parenting patterns such as providing nutritious food to toddlers are still lacking, for example exclusive breastfeeding, other complementary foods, Moreover, the mother's concern about personal hygiene for her toddler is also lacking and the source of the infection is a relative of the toddler. It is recommended to the local government to continue to increase the coverage of basic immunization, provide information to the public to increase knowledge about diphtheria disease, the importance of immunization, providing nutritious food and parenting patterns for children under five. Keywords: Diphtheria, Toddler
