Abstract

Cocoa is one of the country's foreign exchange earners, but cocoa plants often has problems in producing quality seeds. The purpose of this research is to prepare liquid smoke or Liquid Volatile Matter (LVM) and charcoal of pyrolysis as a natural pesticide to inhibit pest and disease in cocoa seed. The steps in this study include the preparation stage of cashew nut and pyrolysis at 600oC, the material contains cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The pyrolysis results in liquid smoke or Liquid Volatile Matter (LVM) and charcoal which is then tested by FTIR. From the results of FTIR analysis from Liquid Volatile Matter (LVMI) showed the same compounds, where the results of the analysis showed that OH group ranged from 2000 cm-1 -3600 cm-1 is a type of phenol compound and the presence of CO group ranges from 1080 cm-1 -1300 cm-1. The seeds soak into LVM filtered using zeolite and without zeolite respectively with concentration of 20%, amure 20% (+) and water (-) and then aerated. Seeds soaked with LVM are then coated with charcoal and some not covered with charcoal are then stored for 15 days. The seeds that have been stored are then growed for 5 days. After 5 days the seeds are grown on polybags that have been filled with soil. Growth results obtained with each treatment is very good, but treatment on soaking with water is partly not grown because some have been overgrown with mushrooms. Based on the results of this study liquid smoke or LVM can be used as a natural pesticide is able to inhibit pests and diseases in cocoa seeds which environmently friendly
