Abstract

Bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) is one of the plants that had been widely known and widely used by the society as a daily dish and as a traditional medicine to treat various diseases. This plant contains alkaloids, triterpenoids, saponins, and flavonoids are thought to be toxic to some degree. The aims of the study is to determine the effect of ethanol extract of bitter melon on the toxicity value and histopatology representation of mencit liver system. This type of research is quasi experimental with post test only control group design. The subjects of this study were male mice (mus musculus) is divided into 5 groups of group I treated with bitter melon extract of 5 mg / kgBB, group II was given bitter melon extract 50 mg / kgBB, group III was given bitter melon extract 500 mg / kgBB, IV was given 5000 mg / kgBB, and group V was given aquadest as a negative control. The treatment was performed for 14 days and a day afterwards microscopic examination of liver system in mice using light microscope. The toxicity effect test using fixed dose method as the method. The acute toxicity test of the ethanol extract of the pair (Momordica charantial L.) on LD50 and the results of histopathology in the necrosis of group 1 zonal, group necrosis of groups 2 and 3 and necrosis of group 4 of the bridge for 24 hours with 16 mice die in each treatment group. Conclusion of the LD50 test for 75% of the mortality in group 4, the extracts of the pair had toxic activity with non-toxic practical criteria, and the histology of the liver of the mice showed toxicological activity with the result of the test at a dose of 5000 mg / kgBB, in all parts of the mouse liver was necrosis
