Abstract
Liquid Volatile Matter (LVM) or liquid smoke is the result of condensation of organic waste containing lignocellulose through a pyrolysis reactor. One of the organic waste that can be used is cashew nut shell. The pyrolysis of cashews contains bioactive compounds in the form of phenolic derivatives that can function as anti-fungi in cocoa seeds. The purpose of this study was to provide quality cocoa seeds free from disease caused by fungus by applying liquid smoke from cashew nut shell. Liquid smoke is obtained using pyrolysis reactor at 600 oC temperature then liquid smoke is extracted by filtration method. The cocoa seeds were soaked with 20% liquid smoke for 30 minutes, then the cocoa seed was treated in the form of greased and not greased activated carbon each packed and not packed with plastic for 10 days and anti-fungal testing by TPC method. The result of observation of liquid smoke as anti-fungus is most effective in inhibiting the growth of fungus in cocoa seed which is greased by activated carbon and packed up to 10 days more of storage period which is indicated by the number of colonies of fungus as much as 7 x 10-3 CFU/gram on treatment 4th day after observation. Thus, liquid smoke can be utilized as a natural pesticide that is environmentally friendly
