Abstract
This study explores the socio-economic impacts of shipyard development in Batupute Village, Soppeng Riaja District, Barru Regency, Indonesia. The main objectives of this study are to understand community perceptions of shipyard development, identify the driving and inhibiting factors of the industry, and measure community expectations regarding the industry. The research method used is qualitative, with in-depth interviews and "snowball sampling" techniques to collect data from local residents. The results show that the shipyard industry has not provided significant improvements to the quality of life of local communities. Many workers are employed through an outsourcing system with wages below the Regional Minimum Wage, and there is a lack of job protection. In addition, the location of the shipyard violates regulations requiring a minimum distance of 2 km from residential areas, causing pollution and other social disturbances. Community complaints regarding shipyard operations have not been properly addressed, giving rise to social problems such as crime. This study highlights the need for better planning, community participation in the development process, and corporate responsibility to improve the welfare of surrounding communities. Thus, this study provides important insights for policymakers and companies in designing more inclusive and sustainable industrial development strategies.
