Abstract
Farmer regeneration has become a strategic issue in Indonesian agricultural development, particularly amid declining youth interest in the agricultural sector. The Youth Entrepreneurship and Employment Support Services (YESS) Program is a policy intervention developed to encourage youth participation through a competitive grant scheme and business mentoring. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the provision of competitive grants under the YESS Program and youth interest in becoming farmers in Uluere District, Bantaeng Regency, and to identify the challenges youth face in utilizing these grants. This study employed a mixed-methods approach with purposive sampling, involving all 19 recipients of competitive grants under the YESS Program. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The analytical techniques used included Spearman's rank correlation and qualitative descriptive analysis. This study offers novelty by presenting mixed-methods-based empirical evidence on the relationship between competitive grants and youth interest in becoming farmers in the context of the YESS Program. The results indicate a fairly strong relationship between the provision of competitive grants under the YESS Program and youth interest in becoming farmers. The main challenges youth face in utilizing these grants include limited knowledge of fund management, limited business development capacity, and difficulties preparing reports. The primary contribution of this study is to provide empirical evidence, based on a mixed-methods design, on the relationship between competitive grant funding and farmer regeneration. From a practical perspective, the findings indicate that competitive grant funding policies should be accompanied by strengthened managerial training and continuous mentoring to make the YESS Program more effective in increasing youth interest in farming and supporting business sustainability.
