Food insecurity continues to pose a major challenge in rural agricultural settings, particularly among smallholder farmers in developing economies. This study investigates the paradox of food insecurity among rice farmers in Padengo Village, Pohuwato Regency, despite their role as food producers. Using a quantitative survey of 60 purposively selected households, the study analyzes the influence of education, land size, rice production, and consumption on household food availability. Findings reveal that land size positively affects food availability, whereas rice production shows a negative association with it. This pattern is interpreted in relation to the high proportion of harvests sold by households to meet cash needs, although this mechanism was not directly tested in the regression model. Education and consumption have no significant effect. Policy implications include the need for household-level food diversification, post-harvest management, and support for smallholders to enhance sustainable food security. This research contributes to the micro-level food security literature by providing empirical evidence on the production–availability paradox in smallholder rice farming households.
