Abstract
ABSTRACT Bonto Manurung Village, Tompobulu District, Maros Regency, has considerable potential for sugar palm commodities, which are utilized by the local community as a source of economic activity through sugar palm production. However, the utilization of this commodity still needs to be developed through product diversification tailored to the capacity and specialization of each business group. This activity aimed to map the production specialization of sugar palm processing groups in Bonto Manurung Village, develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for diversified products, improve partners’ knowledge of product diversification and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and evaluate changes in knowledge following the training. The activity was conducted with KUPS Aren Jaya and KUPS Aren Tompobulu using a group specialization-based diversification approach. The activities consisted of capacity mapping, SOP development and trials, training, demonstrations, production practices, and evaluation using pre-tests and post-tests. A total of 35 participants completed the pre-test and post-test completely. The results produced three diversified products, namely teng-teng, pandan-flavored liquid sugar, and ginger-flavored granulated sugar, which were tailored to the main products of each group in Bonto Manurung Village. The average knowledge score increased from 68.19 to 86.10, representing a 26% increase that was statistically significant (p < 0.01) and had a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.04). The specialization-based diversification approach demonstrates potential as a community empowerment strategy for increasing the added value of sugar palm commodities through the utilization of local production capacities in Bonto Manurung Village. Keywords: Palm sugar, Product diversification, Community empowerment, Technology transfer.
