Abstract

The increasing accumulation of coconut and areca nut processing residues in Pengabuan District, Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency, Jambi Province, creates environmental concerns. Although coconut shells, coconut husks, and areca husks are abundant, integrated technical feasibility assessments for industrial-scale biobriquette production remain limited. This study aimed to conduct an integrated technical feasibility assessment to establish a biomass-based biobriquette manufacturing plant using locally available agricultural residues. A mixed-method approach employed field observations, interviews, and literature review. Technical feasibility was evaluated based on biomass availability, production process design, mass balance, industrial site selection using the Weighted Factor Method, and factory layout planning using Systematic Layout Planning (SLP). Results showed biomass availability was sufficient for industrial-scale production. The proposed plant can produce 792,000 kg of biobriquettes per year with a production yield of 36.87%. The biobriquettes complied with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI), Parit Pudin Village achieved the highest suitability score (4.25) and was selected as the optimal industrial site. The novelty of this study lies in the development of an integrated technical feasibility framework that combines biomass resource assessment, production system design, mass balance analysis, industrial site selection, and factory layout planning into a single decision-making model. These findings indicate that integrated technical planning enhances implementation readiness in the biomass industry. The framework provides practical guidance for industry stakeholders and policymakers to promote agricultural waste valorization and renewable energy development while supporting future techno-economic and sustainability assessments.
