Abstract Self-existence is defined as a human being who is realized that he exists. There are many descriptions of the human psychological conditions associated with the existence of the self in literary works. One of the novels is the novel Because I love you by Guillaume Musso. This novel tells the story of a father and a psychologist named Mark Hathaway who is deeply saddened by the loss of his daughter. This study aims to identify and describe the existence of the character of Mark Hathaway who experienced highs and lows in the novel using Rollo May's theory of existential psychology. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods and content analysis techniques to describe the psychological state of Mark Hathaway's character. The conclusion drawn from this study is that the character, Mark Hathaway who was originally being in the world experienced nonbeing due to the loss of his daughter. The state of nonbeing experienced by Mark is neurotic anxiety and guilt. Then Mark slowly rediscovered his self-awareness through psychotherapy in the form of hypnotherapy until he was at the stage of creative self-awareness.
