Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems are vital for coastal sustainability and local socio-economic survival. While previous studies focus extensively on isolated ecosystem services or general ecotourism performance, limited attention has been given to how mangrove resources are socially organized into an integrated livelihood system at the coastal-village level. This study aims to analyze the utilization of mangrove resources in Pandansari, Kaliwlingi Village, Brebes Regency, and to explain how they shape socio-ecological livelihood organization and community-based adaptation. Employing a qualitative case study design from December 2025 to February 2026 in Dewi Mangrovesari, data were gathered through participant observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with 18 purposively selected informants. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña through a human ecology lens. The results show that livelihood organization operates through three empirical dimensions: material (processing Rhizophora mucronata, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, and Sonneratia caseolaris into batik, flour, syrup, and jam); spatial (structuring the rehabilitated landscape into tracking routes, boat tours, and homestays); and institutional (coordinating conservation and tourism labor division between local community groups). This study demonstrates that coastal livelihoods are sustained through the structured interplay of ecological resources, local institutions, and everyday economic practices. It contributes a refined human ecology framework by demonstrating that community-based adaptation is maintained through operationalized socio-ecological structures rather than isolated extractive or tourism activities.
