Abstract

The objectives of this research are: 1) to know the differences of the result of Start Pike Dive ad Start Flat Dive toward the free-style swimming ability of the ATC swimming athletes, 2) to compare which one is better between the former and the latter toward the free-style swimming ability of the ATC swimming athletes. The population of the research is Amurwa Tirta Club (ATC). It’s a swimming athlete community with 20 people of 8-14 years old. The researcher uses the whole sample population as the method used. After conducting the pre-test and then comparing the both groups with the subject matching ordinal pairing method, with the AB BA formula where A is the experimental group 1 and B is the experimental group 2, the researcher gives the A the start pike dive exercise using the free-style swimming, while B is given the start flat dive using the same style of swimming. Each group is given 5 meeting a week for 8 weeks. The final result of the test is analyzed statically with the T-test formula and the significance is α 0,05. The result of the research data shows the average swimming time passing 50 meters before having the start pike dive exercise is 47,97 seconds with the standard deviation of 6.63; the fastest time is 37,02 and the longest is 59,10 seconds. In other hand, the average time taken for passing 50 meters before the start flat dive exercise is 40,07 seconds with the standard deviation of 8.01; the fastest time is 34,98 and the longest one is 58,21 seconds. Based on the research, the researcher concludes that having 40 meetings of start pike dive exercise is better to improve the ability of free-style swimming than the start flat dive exercise. Even so, both the start pike dive and start flat dive are effective to improve the speed of the free-style swimming. Both of them can be variation in having swimming exercises.
