Abstract
The use of hydrogen in fuell cell as an alternative fuel has problems in its storage. One way is to adsorb hydrogen on the surface of carbon nanotubes, but the hydrogen storage capacity is not maximal and metal doping needs to be done to increase its storage so that the research was conducted to determine the effect of Sc and V metal dopants on CNT on hydrogen bandgap and adsorption energy so that it can be used for hydrogen storage. Density Functional Theory is used as a calculation method with B3LYP functions and base set 6-31G *. NWChem software is used for energy calculations. The calculation results show bandgap from CNT, CNT-Sc and CNT-V respectively at 1.5530595770 eV, 1.1867661186 eV and 1.5053155447 eV, but bandgap has a slight increase when the structure adsorbs hydrogen. Hydrogen adsorption energy in CNT, CNT-Sc and CNT-V are -0.0108127215 eV, -0.0459859037 eV, and -0.3491878286 eV respectively, this shows that adsorption on CNT-V is stronger than CNT-Sc and CNT. From the results of this study it can be concluded that the doping of Sc and V metals can reduce bandgap and increase hydrogen adsorption energy in CNT.
